For Auld Lang Syne

This has been an interesting year for me, with some very high “highs” and some very low “lows”. But without the disappointments that I faced, I never would have gone on this incredible adventure. And I doubt very much that the adventure ends here. As we speak, I am currently planning a “ghost trip” to Colombia and Panama (my friend Melissa turned me onto “ghost trips”, which is essentially researching a city or place and planning an entire trip there, for some time in the future, even though you have no immediate plans to go). I hope to turn the “ghost trip” into a reality (perhaps next Christmas), but we shall see.

If there is one thing that I have learned this year, it is the importance of friends, old and new. Friendship has been bittersweet for me in 2012. I have left behind some very dear friends (several of which I would never have made it through the year without!), been reunited with others that I have missed while living in Ottawa, and made new friends on my travels that taught me invaluable lessons about adversity, strength and following your dreams.

When I think “New Year” I immediately hear “Auld Land Syne” in my head. And the lyrics are especially poignant for me this year:

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and old lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear, For auld lang syne,

We’ll take a cup of kindness yet, for auld lang syne.

And surely you’ll buy your pint cup !
and surely I’ll buy mine !
And we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

We two have run about the slopes,
and picked the daisies fine ;
But we’ve wandered many a weary foot,
since auld lang syne.

We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dine ;
But seas between us broad have roared
since auld lang syne.

And there’s a hand my trusty friend !
And give us a hand o’ thine !
And we’ll take a right good-will draught,
for auld lang syne.

I wish you all the very happiest and healthiest 2013 possible. Thank you for following me on my adventure!
